Since the 1960s, a certain strand of photographically produced artists’ books has been associated with democracy metaphorically because of their production methods allowing them to be disseminated widely. This brief survey will look at several recent and historic books by artists that have documented or were meant as protests in support of democracy or that subtly yet purposefully resisted hegemonic rule.
